π About Memphis
Memphis, the largest city in Tennessee and the seat of Shelby County, sits on the bluffs above the Mississippi River where the state meets Arkansas and Mississippi. With a busy international airport and a steady stream of first-time travelers, its passport acceptance offices tend to fill their appointment books quickly, so it pays to plan a few weeks ahead.
Downtown applicants have two strong choices within walking distance of each other: the Main Office Window Service at the B.B. King Boulevard post office, and the Shelby County Probate Clerk's passport desk inside the county administration building on North Main. The county office is a useful backup for new and child applications when USPS slots are scarce, though it does not handle renewals. Out east, the White Station Post Office on Park Avenue spares suburban families the trip downtown.
For anyone in a hurry, note that Memphis has no federal passport agency of its own. Statewide guidance lives on our Tennessee passport page.
π‘ Good to know
USPS acceptance across Memphis is by appointment, so call the specific branch before you go rather than dropping in. If you are only renewing a recent adult passport you can usually mail Form DS-82 without visiting a counter at all. Families with minors under 16 should plan for both parents to attend. Compare all three offices on our Memphis directory.
