📖 About Grand Marais
Grand Marais anchors the far end of Minnesota's North Shore, a small arts-and-fishing town tucked between the Sawtooth Mountains and Lake Superior. It is the seat of Cook County and the most practical place in the northeast corner of the state to start a U.S. passport application, whether you are heading across the border into Ontario or planning a trip much farther afield.
Two acceptance offices serve the community, and they are close enough to walk between. The Grand Marais Post Office on East Highway 61 suits travelers who want an evening or Saturday-adjacent errand rolled into a mail run, while the Cook County Auditor-Treasurer's Office at the courthouse is a comfortable choice for families and first-time applicants who like dealing with a county desk. Both take new adult applications and applications for minors, and both operate by appointment.
There is no passport agency in the Arrowhead. The nearest full-service Minneapolis Passport Agency is roughly 260 miles south, about a four-and-a-half-hour drive, and it serves only travelers with urgent international trips inside two weeks. For everyone else, applying locally in Grand Marais and mailing the file to the State Department is the right path.
Because Cook County is a summer tourism magnet, appointment calendars fill quickly from late spring onward, so book several weeks ahead of any planned travel. If you are comparing towns, see the rest of our Minnesota passport directory.
💡 Good to know
Both Grand Marais offices accept payment for the federal fee and their own acceptance fee separately, and neither is a place to renew a valid adult passport by walk-in — qualifying renewals go by mail. Passport photos can be taken at the local DMV. Plan around the North Shore's busy summer season and reserve your slot early; details for each counter are in our Grand Marais listings.
