McAllen sits at the heart of the Rio Grande Valley in Hidalgo County, and it is one of the better-served cities in deep South Texas for passport applications. Between two U.S. Post Office branches and the City of McAllen's own passport division, first-time applicants and families with children can usually find an appointment or a walk-in slot without leaving town.

The two USPS branches — the McAllen main post office on East Pecan Boulevard and the Downtown Station on South 12th Street — handle new adult and child applications (DS-11) by appointment scheduled through USPS. The City of McAllen runs a separate acceptance facility in the Downtown Parking Garage that adds walk-in service and special second-Saturday hours, which is handy for working families and anyone who cannot get away on a weekday.

Because McAllen is far from any regional agency, plan ahead: routine and expedited applications are both submitted here and mailed for processing, so allow the standard processing window rather than counting on same-week turnaround.
