π About Columbia
Columbia is South Carolina's capital and the seat of Richland County, home to the State House, Fort Jackson, and the flagship campus of the University of South Carolina. That mix of government, military, and student life means a lot of first-time passport applicants pass through the Midlands each year, and the city gives you three solid places to get the job done.
Downtown residents and anyone with State House or courthouse business will find the Columbia Main Post Office on Assembly Street the natural choice, while families in the booming northeast suburbs around 29229 usually prefer the Sandhills branch on Clemson Road. Students, staff, and walk-in visitors can turn to USC Postal Services on Hampton Street, which is unusual in taking applications without an appointment.
For most travelers, a routine application submitted at any of these offices is all you need. If you have urgent international travel within two weeks and require in-person agency service, the nearest public U.S. passport agency is in Atlanta, roughly 175 miles and about two and three-quarter hours west on I-20; note that South Carolina's own Charleston Passport Center is a mail-processing facility and does not serve walk-in customers.
π‘ Good to know
Two of Columbia's three offices work by appointment, so book early in spring and summer when travel demand peaks. If you would rather skip scheduling, the walk-in window at USC Postal Services is a handy fallback on weekdays. Whichever you pick, bring your completed form, original proof of citizenship, a photo ID with a photocopy, and separate payments for the two fees.
