📖 About Salt Lake City
Salt Lake City, the Utah state capital and seat of Salt Lake County, gives residents an unusually full set of passport choices for a city its size. Three acceptance counters cover different corners of the valley, so you can pick the one that fits your commute rather than driving across town.
If you handle government paperwork downtown, the Salt Lake County Clerk pairs a passport counter with the county's other services. West-side families near the airport corridor often prefer the Main Post Office, which can also snap your passport photo, while anyone in the urban core will find Downtown Station the easiest to reach on foot or by TRAX. All three take first-time and child applications by appointment.
Salt Lake City is also one of the rare cities with its own full U.S. Passport Agency, located at 324 South State Street downtown. That office is reserved for travelers with urgent, documented international trips and is booked through the National Passport Information Center — for a routine application, an acceptance counter above is the right door. For counters in other parts of the state, see our wider Utah passport directory.
Whichever site you choose, book ahead: spring break and the run-up to summer fill appointment calendars fast along the Wasatch Front.
💡 Good to know
The downtown U.S. Passport Agency handles life-or-death and imminent-travel cases only, so for a standard trip use one of the acceptance counters and apply several weeks before you leave. Renewals that qualify can usually be mailed with Form DS-82 and skip the counter entirely. Compare all three sites on this Salt Lake City page.
