📖 About this office
The Roanoke Post Office on Rutherford Avenue is the downtown anchor for passport applications in the Star City. It sits just north of the rail yards and the historic City Market, a short drive from most neighborhoods in the independent city of Roanoke, and it handles the full first-time passport process for adults and children alike.
Like every USPS passport counter, this location works strictly by appointment, which you reserve online through the official Retail Customer Appointment Scheduler. Staff here verify your identity, witness your signature, and seal your application before forwarding it to the U.S. Department of State — they do not print the passport book or card themselves.
If you would rather apply closer to the southwest county suburbs, the South County Library branch in Roanoke also accepts applications, and the wider Virginia state guide lists further options if you are willing to travel.
💡 Good to know
Book your slot in advance at the USPS appointment scheduler; walk-ins are rarely accommodated here. Bring your completed DS-11, original proof of citizenship, a photo ID plus a copy, and two forms of payment — the acceptance fee is paid to the Post Office and the passport fee separately to the State Department. Parking is available in the downtown lots nearby.
