📖 About this office
The Grand Rapids Area Library doubles as a passport acceptance facility, offering a quieter, appointment-only alternative to a government counter. Located at 140 NE 2nd Street a short walk from the Mississippi River, the library accepts and executes applications on behalf of the U.S. Department of State for first-time applicants and minors using Form DS-11.
Passport appointments run on a limited weekly window rather than all-day walk-in hours, so calling ahead at 218-326-7640 to reserve a slot is essential. Staff can hand you blank DS-11 and DS-82 forms and point you to the National Passport Information Center if you have questions the library can't answer at the desk.
Because it sits in the heart of downtown, the library pairs well with a photo stop nearby before your appointment. Families juggling several applications often prefer the library's calmer setting; see how it compares with the county option on our Grand Rapids overview.
💡 Good to know
Fees for the federal portion must be paid by check or money order; cards are not accepted. Since appointment slots are limited to a few afternoons a week, book early during busy spring and summer travel season. Not sure which local desk fits your timeline? Our Minnesota passport hub lays out how acceptance facilities work statewide.
