π About Sidney
Sidney anchors the southwestern corner of Nebraska's Panhandle as the seat of Cheyenne County, a High Plains community shaped by the Union Pacific rail line and Interstate 80. If you live here or in the ranch country nearby, you have two convenient places to submit a passport application without heading to Lincoln or Denver.
For most travelers the Sidney Post Office on Illinois Street is the simplest choice, since it accepts applications by appointment and takes passport photos on site. Families juggling other errands downtown may prefer the Cheyenne County District Court counter at the courthouse on 10th Avenue, which also accepts first-time and minor applications.
Nebraska has no full-service passport agency of its own, so if you are on a tight timeline the nearest option is the Colorado Passport Agency near Denver, roughly 170 miles and under three hours west on I-76 and I-80. For a routine trip, though, applying at one of Sidney's acceptance facilities and mailing the packet works fine; just build in several weeks for standard processing.
Whichever counter you choose, call ahead to confirm passport hours, and remember that anyone applying for the first time β including children under 16, who must appear with both parents or guardians β has to apply in person. More Panhandle guidance lives on our Nebraska passport page.
π‘ Good to know
Bring an unsigned DS-11, original proof of U.S. citizenship (such as a certified birth certificate), and a photo ID with a photocopy. The Sidney Post Office schedules acceptance appointments through the USPS system, while the courthouse counter is best confirmed by phone. See both side by side on the Sidney office list.
