π About Lincoln
As Nebraska's capital and second-largest city, Lincoln gives residents two very different places to apply for a passport, and the right choice usually comes down to who you are and where you live. Families on the east side and anyone who wants a conventional full-service branch tend to head to the Gateway Station Post Office on Q Street, which handles routine first-time books and cards and takes photos on the spot.
Downtown residents, university employees, and the city's large population of study-abroad students often prefer the UNL Passport Acceptance Office in the Nebraska Union, one of the rare campus offices in the state that is genuinely open to the public. Both sit inside Lancaster County, the state's most populous county, so wait times can stretch during spring and early summer when travel season peaks.
Nebraska has no regional passport agency of its own. The nearest is the Minneapolis Passport Agency, roughly 430 miles and a six-and-a-half-hour drive to the northeast, reserved for travelers with proven near-term departures. For everyone else, one of Lincoln's two acceptance offices, planned a few weeks ahead, is the practical route.
Whichever office you pick, appointments are the norm rather than the exception here, and both accept the same DS-11 paperwork for new and minor applications. Renewals by mail skip the counter entirely, so if you already hold an undamaged adult passport you may not need to visit either location at all.
π‘ Good to know
If your travel is more than a couple of months out, apply early and let routine processing do the work rather than paying for expedited service. Study-abroad students should note that the university office opens its calendar only two weeks ahead, so a mid-semester rush can mean checking daily for an opening.
