Michigan is one of the few states with a U.S. passport agency inside its borders: the Detroit Passport Agency, at 477 Michigan Avenue in downtown Detroit, serves travelers with a departure or foreign-visa deadline close at hand and runs strictly by appointment. For the vast majority of residents, though, the routine path is a passport acceptance facility close to home. Michigan operates 601 of them, spread across 382 cities and towns in all 83 counties, so most people can find a post office, county or township clerk, or library that handles applications within a short drive.
Michigan's setting makes travel documents an everyday concern rather than a once-a-decade errand. The state shares a long border with Canada, and daily crossings at Detroit-Windsor, Port Huron-Sarnia, and Sault Ste. Marie mean a real, practical need for accepted ID. Michigan is also one of only five states, alongside Minnesota, New York, Vermont, and Washington, that issue an Enhanced Driver's License. An EDL lets a Michigan resident drive or sail into Canada without a passport book, though it cannot be used to fly, so many households keep both.
Coverage stretches across two very different landmasses. The Lower Peninsula holds the major population centers, from metro Detroit through Grand Rapids, Lansing, and Flint, where acceptance offices cluster thickly. Most passport acceptance offices are U.S. Post Offices, public libraries, and county or city clerk offices that act as official acceptance facilities. You apply in person using Form DS-11 if you are getting a passport for the first time, if your previous passport was lost, stolen, or damaged, if it was issued more than 15 years ago, or if you were under 16 when it was issued.
Fill out the form ahead of time but do not sign it — a passport agent must watch you sign. Some facilities accept walk-ins during set passport hours, while others require an appointment, so it is worth calling the office listed on your city’s page before you go.

The application fee is paid to the U.S. Department of State; the $35 execution (acceptance) fee is paid to the facility where you apply. Expedited service adds $60, and faster return delivery is available for a small extra charge. Fees are set nationally and are the same at every acceptance office in the country.

As of 2026, routine passport applications take about 4–6 weeks to process, and expedited applications about 2–3 weeks, counted from the day the State Department receives your application. Add roughly 2 weeks for mailing on each end.
The busiest season runs from late winter through summer, so apply between October and December when you can. If you are traveling within 14 days, you will need an appointment at a regional passport agency rather than a local acceptance facility.
💡 Good to know
An acceptance office reviews and forwards your application; it does not print the passport or provide same-day service. Only the Detroit Passport Agency handles urgent in-person cases, and only for travelers with proof of imminent departure. Bring an unsigned application, your original proof of citizenship plus a photocopy, an unexpired photo ID with a copy, and a passport photo. Many Michigan clerk and post office locations take photos and applications by appointment only, which fills quickly during spring break and summer, so book ahead.
If you already have an Enhanced Driver's License for Canada trips but decide to fly anywhere overseas, remember the EDL won't work at the airport. Give yourself several weeks to add a passport book before an international flight, and longer if you're applying from the Upper Peninsula.
